As the funding for Nova Scotia harbours has been allotted the small craft harbours southwest shore will benefit from infrastructure improvements. Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret’s, on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, made the announcement about the funding. According to Keddy the government is committed to improving small craft harbours in Nova Scotia so that individuals employed in the fisheries can continue to earn a living and successfully contribute to our province.
Keddy also said that the funding will make a real difference in improving efficiency and providing safer working conditions for Nova Scotia fish harvesters at six important fishing harbours. He informed that the authority has allocated a total of $1.37 million in 2008-09 for projects. He also told that these funds will be used for the improvement of infrastructure in four hrabours such as Cape Sable Island, Lockeport, Clark’s Harbour, and Newellton Harbours.
Keddy explained that as part of three major capital projects on the island, the approach to the Kenny wharf is being completed at Clark’s Harbour, a marginal wharf and floating docks will be built at West Head and floating docks will be installed at Newellton. Lockeport: Breakwater work will be carried out to control waves that wash over the existing breakwater during adverse weather.
