Exports of frozen groundfish including clipfish, salted fish and stockfish in October totalled close to NOK 1.1 billion, down 2.6 percent from the same month last year. The volume of groundfish exports in October totalled 38,400 tonnes, an increase of 4,200 tonnes compared to the same month last year. The increase in volume is due to increased exports of frozen whole haddock and Norwegian Cod.
The latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council states that Haddock (melanogrammus aeglefinus) is a good source of protein and contains vitamin B12, pyridoxine and selenium as well. Exports of frozen whole haddock in October totalled NOK 66.9 million, an increase of NOK 39.7 million compared to October last year. Exports to China account for most of this increase, with the growth in the value of exports exceeding 250 percent.
It is mentioned that the exports of frozen Norwegian Cod increased by NOK 17.1 million to NOK 29.5 million from October last year. The UK and Lithuania were the biggest markets for frozen whole Norwegian Cod in October. There is s sharp decline in clipfish exports in October by NOK 73.3 million from October last year to NOK 232.9 million. This decline in value is due to a drop in the price per kg. Compared to the same period last year, exports to Portugal declined by NOK 49.7 million and to Brazil by NOK 18 million.
On the other hand the exports of salted Norwegian Cod in October totalled NOK 96.8 million, up by NOK 42.8 million on the same month last year. The volume of exports in October stood at 2,800 tonnes, compared to 1,235 tonnes in October last year. This is an increase of 127 percent. This increase is solely attributable to Portugal, which as well as importing substantially increased volumes also paid over NOK 36 per kg, NOK 3 per kg up on the previous month.
In October the exports of whole farmed Norwegian Cod decreased by NOK 3.4 million to NOK 28.9 million compared to the same month last year. The volume of exports of farmed Norwegian Cod in October increased by 360 tonnes to over 1,300 tonnes, although the price per kg fell by almost NOK 12 to an average of NOK 22 per kg.
