A Shetland fishing trawler , with a crew of Three on board, tackled an engine room fire 40 miles North east of Shetland late on Saturday night September 18.
Shetland Coastguards were alerted just before 10pm by a Mayday broadcast from the steel-hulled 23 metre fishing trawler Fairway LK 270, who reported a fire in he engine room.
Whilst the crew tackled the engine room blaze, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R102 from Sumburgh and the Lerwick All-weather RNLI lifeboat headed to the fishing trawler’s position.
Following a Mayday Relay Broadcast issued by Shetland Coastguards, the DANISH fishing trawler STROEMEGG arrived at the scene and was joined later by the Scottish Fisheries Protection vessel Jura.
With the fire in the engine out, the trawler was waiting for the engine room to cool down to see if the engines could be restarted.
However the RNLI lifeboat from Lerwick towed the trawler back to Lerwick Harbour where it arrived safely later on Sunday Morning. No one was injured in the incident.
Shetland Coastguard Watch manager Sandy Wylie said: “This our second fishing vessel engine room fire in two days and again the skipper did exactly the right thing by alerting us quickly so that we could ensure the safety of everyone on board”.
On Friday , a major rescue operation was launched off Shetland after a Norwegian longliner The Keltic SF 211V went on fire.
