A new code of conduct for the Moray Firth has been agreed by fishermen from all sectors of the industry to prevent potential conflict amongst boats using different types of fishing gear.
The issue of possible gear conflict was first raised by the Mallaig and North West Fishermen’s Association (MNWFA) earlier this year, which resulted in the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) setting up a meeting from all fishing sectors who use the Moray Firth to find a solution.
This meeting, which was chaired by the SFF, was held in Inverness and was attended by representatives from the Scottish White Fish Producers Association (SWFPA), MNWFA, Scallop Association and unaffiliated fishers.
Those present contributed to a healthy and informed debate on the fisheries of the Moray Firth. It was agreed that improved communication between the different sectors, including creelers, scallopers and squid catchers, was the best means to avoid conflict.
This resulted in the drawing up of a Code of Conduct that is now being distributed amongst fishermen, and which it is hoped will be recognised and adhered to for the inshore area between Duncansby and Rattray Heads.
Malcolm Morrison, SFF Policy Officer, said: “This is a good example of fishermen working together under the auspices of their associations, and will be a blueprint for the years to come as industry has to face up to increasing demands on the sea by such factors as the Marine Protected Area network and the renewables industry.
“We therefore urge fishermen to join their local associations in order to ensure that they have a say in the future management of the seas.”
