According to press release the fisherman has now been questioned over the alleged use of an unauthorised boat to fish in the Vasse Estuary, near Busselton. The officer said that he could also face a charge of failing to remain in attendance of his fishing gear and with using an over-length net.
There were many charges slapped on the fisherman and each one carries a maximum fine of $2,000 and, if found guilty in court, he would be required to pay additional mandatory penalties of more than $28,000 for the fish involved. Supervising Fisheries and Marine Officer Kevin Johnson said the apprehension of the fisherman on Thursday followed a joint operation by Busselton Fisheries Officers, conducted in conjunction with Police and Wildlife Officers.
Johnson informed that a commercial fishing boat has been seized, with over 850 metres of netting aboard. One of the nets was measured at 522 metres. The maximum allowable length is set at 365 metres, says Johnson. He also said that separate investigations were being conducted by Wildlife Officers from the Department of Environment and Conservation after 11 water birds were found trapped in the netting.
