Joe Borg, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, has speaks out on the future of Baltic Sea fisheries and maritime policy. The Commissioner will first participate in the signature of a ministerial declaration – the Stockholm Declaration on the Management of Baltic Sea Fisheries.
The conference “Baltic Sea Fisheries: Lessons Learned and Future Perspectives”, organised jointly by the Regional Advisory Council for the Baltic Sea and the Swedish Presidency. In his speech to the conference, Commissioner Borg will highlight the impact of the upcoming reform of the Common Fisheries Policy on Baltic Sea fisheries. He will praise the Baltic Sea region for being at the forefront of moves towards the regionalisation of fisheries management.
It sis said that Borg will also share his views on how the reform could re-order the priorities of the Common Fisheries Policy in favour of ecological sustainability, how it could address the chronic overcapacity of the EU fishing fleet and how decisions can be moved closer to the people they affect. In this event Borg is said to meet with the Swedish Parliamentary Committee on Fisheries and discuss the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
The Commissioner will stress the importance of cross-border cooperation and stakeholder participation in the further development of the tool.
