At constant prices, the volume of the catch of Icelandic vessels decreased by 10.3% in May 2009 compared with May 2008. In the first four months of 2009 the volume has how ever increased by 4.0 % compared to the same period the previous year.
Total catch of Icelandic vessels in May 2009 was 64,102 tonnes compared to 100,014 tonnes in May 2008. Demersal species accounted for 37 thousand tonnes, thereof cod 15 thousand tonnes, haddock nearly 8 thousand tonnes, saithe 5 thousand tonnes and redfish 2,500 tonnes. Total catch of pelagic species accounted for 21 thousand tonnes, which was herring for nearly 12 thousand tonnes and blue whiting for nearly 10 thousand.
