The Government of Canada has officially released 2010 fish and seafood export figures which shows that the exports grow by more than 7 percent.
According to Minister Shea fish and seafood is Canada’s second largest single food export commodity. She added that the government is working with all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of our fisheries. Consumers can be confident that Canadian products are among the best in the world.
Canada’s fisheries are a valuable natural resource and a significant driver of its economy. Minister Shea said that Canadian fish and seafood products are exported around the world and generated more than $3.9 billion in export revenues in 2010, an increase of more than 7 percent from 2009. She told that this increase demonstrates the trust consumers place in Canadian products worldwide.
Nearly two-thirds (over $2.4 billion) of Canadian fish and seafood exports in 2010 were destined for the United States. The European Union and Japan followed with imports of Canadian products valued at more than $400 million and $300 million respectively. The Government of Canada, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, will take this success story to a global audience this weekend at the International Boston Seafood Show.
