‘The roe dryer has worked very well. The roe is dry enough when it comes from the machine to be packed straight away. Previously we had to wait as much as 24 hours for the roe to dry.’ Said production manager Magnús Róbertsson at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjördur production plant, where processing of the first landing of capelin by pelagic vessel Lundey NS at the weekend is coming to a close.
Magnús Róbertsson said that production went well. The fish are graded as they leave the ship’s tanks with the female fish routed to roe extraction and the larger male fish of around 40 pieces per kilo, are routed to the freezers to be processed for the Eastern European market.
Magnús Róbertsson commented that the roe dryer has certainly paid off.
‘This is a big change for the better. Now we are processing capelin and roe as it is discharged from the ship and the quality doesn’t get any better than this.
Faxi RE is on its way to Vopnafjördur with between 1000 and 1100 tonnes of capelin that will go directly to production. Ingunn AK is on fishing grounds north-west of Gardsskagi, and when we spoke to skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson today, he reported having between 700 and 800 tonnes on board from a single shot.
