The first catches of capelin of the 2022-23 season have been caught off the north of Iceland.
Brim’s pelagic vessel Víkingur sailed on Saturday and took the first few hauls, followed by Síldarvinnslan’s Beitir.
‘We are fishing east of the Kolbeinsey Ridge and and we saw plenty of capelin on Saturday, but not so much yesterday,’ said Beitir’s skipper Sturla Thórðarson.
‘There isn’t a lot right now, but we have 850 tonnes so far – 300 tonnes in the first tow, then 200 and it looks like 150-200 tonnes in the last one. It looks to be fine quality capelin, 40 pieces per kilo and an equal mix of male and female fish.’
