The first capelin of the season was landed at Neskaupstaður in eastern Iceland at the weekend.
Greenland-flagged pelagic boat Polar Amaroq docked with 710 tonnes of frozen capelin on board, plus 30 tonnes of graded-out capelin that went for fishmeal production.
According to skipper Halldór Jónasson, the trip was a good one, with the fish caught in the trawl zone north-east of Langanes.
Polar Amaroq sailed on Saturday evening after a crew change, this time with skipper Geir Zoëga in the wheelhouse.
‘We started off in the same area as the previous trip and the first haul was four hundred tonnes for a two-hour tow. This was all good quality capelin with only a small amount that was graded out,’ he said.
‘There’s plenty of capelin to be seen on the fishing grounds, and whales everywhere. There’s life everywhere here.’
