As per the local news source the fire completely engulfed the two storerooms and burned the contents to a cinder in the early hours of Tuesday October 14 morning near the fish market in Looe, South East Cornwall. It is reported that nine trawler nets were destroyed in the blaze are estimated to be worth between £5,000 and £10,000.
Fisherman Charlie Jaycock, who lost a substantial amount of equipment, informed that this has been a really bad year for fisherman for a number of reasons. He said that the the equipment was not insured.
Looe Harbour Commissioners lease about 40 of the stores to fishermen to lock up their fishing gear. Penhaligon explained that the fire started at about 1am and the fire brigades were here swiftly, which is an excellent response from the retained fire crew. He informed that the concrete walls stopped fire spreading too much. It is told that one of the fishermen lost five trawl nets while the other lost four.
According to Penhaligon a lot of the fishermen made the nets themselves to keep down costs, but if bought from a netmaker, they cost around £5,000 to £10,000 each. He told that two fire engines from Looe, two from Bodmin and one from Liskeard attended the fire, bringing it under control with two hose reels and two monitors. A propane cylinder vented off while the crews were at a safe distance.
