Ownership of the Skagerak Pelagic factory in Skagen, Denmark’s largest herring processor has gone to FF Skagen, which agreed last week to buy the entire shareholding in the company.
FF Skagen has producing fishmeal and fish oil in Skagen for almost sixty years and in recent years has been working towards gaining approval to produce fish oil for human consumption.
‘The acquisition of Skagerak Pelagic is a natural development of FF Skagen, ensuring consistency in the processing of pelagic species in Denmark,’ said FF Skagen managing director, who also becomes Skagerak Pelagic’s CEO.
‘With the acquisition of Skagerak Pelagic, FF Skagen is able to ensure full utilisation of all the high quality raw material supplied by the fishing vessels to Skagerak Pelagic. FF Skagen utilises all of this raw material by producing quality proteins and fish oil for use in animal feed.’
He said that Skagerak Pelagic’s customers and regular suppliers will not see any significant changes.
‘To produce the best herring, it’s vital to optimise every link in the chain between the sea and the consumer’s table. Skagerak Pelagic must aim to optimise production quality with full focus on customers’ wishes and needs,’ he said, adding that in 2013 the fishermen made it possible to establish FF Skagen Fund on the basis of the 50-year-old Fiskernes Fiskeindustri AMBA in Skagen, which today is the majority owner of FF Skagen.
