Ocean City was built on commercial fishing and has been a prime source of income for the community. They celebrate a festival to honor commercial fishing in which seafood cooking demonstration, games among activities planned. The festival aims to show people just how important the industry is. The third annual Harbor Day at the Docks took place to recognize fishermen and the area’s fishing heritage.
Select maritime traditions and practices, including commercial fishing, sport fishing, marine aquaculture, safety at sea and seafood processing, will be the focus of the event. Lisa Challenger, director of tourism promotion for Worcester County, said that it is very important to recognize the fishermen and celebrate what they bring to us.
Seafood cooking demonstrations, fish cleaning techniques, maritime storytelling and children’s games were held along the docks. The festive day ends with the Blessing of the Harbor when fishermen board a boat saying a prayer for the season, as well as the traditional lobster toss, where a live lobster was thrown back into the harbor as a symbol of thanks for the catch.
