The Faroese Ministry of Fisheries is preparing a series of quota auctions that start this week, with herring, blue whiting and mackerel quotas offered for sale to the highest bidder, as well as groundfish quotas in both Russian and Norwegian zones of the Barents Sea.
This year the Ministry plans to auction quotas for a total of 53,000 tonnes of herring, 54,594 tonnes of blue whiting, 10,894 tonnes of mackerel, 2213 tonnes of groundfish in the Russian part of the Barents Sea and 614 tonnes of groundfish in the the Norwegian Barents Sea area.
The first auction is scheduled for Tuesday 22nd of August when 1106 tonnes of Russian Barents Sea groundfish quota will go under the hammer, as well as 5447 tonnes of mackerel quotas. The next auction takes place two days later, with 1107 tonnes of Russian Barents Sea groundfish quota on offer, as well as 614 tonnes of groundfish in Norwegian waters and a further 5447 tonnes of mackerel quotas.
Two more quota auctions are due to be held this month, with 9000 tonnes of blue whiting quota and 9000 tonnes of herring quotas up for auction on the 29th and again on the 31st.
Auctions resume in mid-September, with a further 9000 tonnes of blue whiting quota and 9000 tonnes of herring quotas auctioned on the 12th and again on the 14th.
The final week of auctions will see 9297 tonnes of blue whiting quota and 8500 tonnes of herring quotas auctioned on the 19th and the same amounts on the 21st.
