The Nodosa yard at Marín in Spain has launched a new factory trawler designed to operate mainly on squid in Falklands Islands waters.
The 67m LOA, 12m beam Stanley-registered Monteferro has been built for joint venture company Kalamar, owned by Falklands and Spanish interests. It replaces the company’s older Kalatxori and will split Kalamar’s share of the quota with the company’s other trawler, Castelo.
Monteferro is designed by Nodosa to Kalamar’s requirements for good fuel economy with a 2400kW MaK main engine, and comfort, hence the semi-inverted bow that is expected to reduce pitching and to make the trawler a better working platform.
Deck equipment is an all-electric Ibercisa package with 35 tonne trawl winches controlled using a Scantrol iSYM system, a 16 cubic metre net drum and four sweepline winches.
The factory deck has eight blast freezers with a 67 tonne per day production capacity and Monteferro has a 1340 cubic metre refrigerated fish hold.
The primary target species is loligo squid, destined mainly for Spanish and Italian markets, as well as some illex squid and hake.
Monteferro’s design takes in the latest ILO requirements for comfort and safety on board, some of which proved a challenge during the design process. The accommodation for the 44-strong crew consists mainly of two-berth cabins, although to manage to keep the ship within the 1499gt limitation, there are a few with four berths. The tonnage is a key point, as going beyond 1500gt would have put Monteferro in a bracket that would have cost crucial days at sea in the Falklands zone.
