The Slippurinn DNG yard in Akureyri has signed a contract to deliver the factory deck installation for new freezer trawler Júlíus Geirmundsson, which is expected to be delivered to Hraðfrystihúsið-Gunnvör in the second half of 2026.
The new vessel is being built by Atilleros Armón in Spain, and will replace a trawler built for the company more that thirty years ago.
The contract with Slippurinn DNG extends to catch reception, heading, pre-selection and chilling, filleting, trimming and weighing into cartons. There’s also a greater focus that in the past on side-stream products and this involves adding some innovations to the production process.
‘The design of the processing system has been done in co-operation with HG, with the emphasis in flexibility to handle a variety of species and numerous product categories within each species. We’re confident that this will be a productive system that will deliver production to a unique standard,’ said Slippurinn DNG’s Magnús Blöndal.
The layout is for all of the fish coming from the pounds to be headed right away, before being routed to a grading system to select fish for filleting, trimming and packing. This makes it easier to handle a number of products from each target species, streamlining production in a way that lightens to the load on the freezing hotel that receives production before transfer to the fishroom.
