Namibia has been asked to export fish and fish products directly to Italy, say a report.
According to a media report Italian business houses have decided to import fish and fish products directly from Namibia. Currently, Italy imports Namibian fish and fish products through Spain. An according has been signed between Namibian and Italian business delegates.
NewFood Import and Export Agency director, Alexandro Lamana, said they want to import fish directly from Namibia, saying it would cheaper and more viable. He added that at present they are importing fish from Spain through Namibia so the payment surcharges push the price of the fish up. Another challenge they face is that they often do not receive the exact fish and fish products they had ordered.
Now the Italian business people wants to get fish and fish products directly from Namibia and for this they will soon travel to Namibia to meet with Namibian business people in the fishing industry in order to form partnerships and find ways for fish and fish products to be exported directly to Italy, informed Lamana.
Meanwhile, Fisheries and Marine Resources Permanent Secretary, Ulitala Hiveluah, Namibian government, said that her Ministry will look into the matter and see to it that the country exports fish and fish products directly to Italy in the near future. The bulk of Namibia’s fish and fish products go to Spain. The main commercial capture species include swordfish, crab, hake and rock lobster.
During the meeting, Hiveluah called on Italian business people to invest in the exploration, processing and marketing of marine resources in Namibia. She said that the Namibian Government continues to encourage foreign participation in the exploration, processing and marketing of marine resources through mutually beneficial joint ventures.
