North Wales seafood companies are taking part in European seafood exposition in a hope to find thousands of new European customers. Information revealed that five Welsh fishing firms will attend the European Seafood Exposition from May 3. The companies: Bangor Mussel Producers, Selwyn’s Penclawdd Seafoods, Anglesey Sea Bass Selonda UK, North Wales-based The Lobster Pot and Holyhead’s Bay Seafoods, will be among 1600 exhibitors from the industry taking part in the event, which will be held at the Brussels Exhibition & Conference Centre in the Belgian capital.
Welsh companies stand will showcase the companies and a range of their produce including Anglesey seabass, scallops/ queen scallops, lobster, cockles, mussels and laverbread.Š Visitors will also be able to taste the high quality of the Welsh produce with an on-stand chef cooking a variety of dishes. The UK seafood market is worth around £2.72 billion, and consumer expenditure on fish has increased at a faster rate than other foods with fish and shellfish products now accounting for 5.9 percent of food expenditure.
Around 80 percent of Welsh fish and shellfish are exported to the continent, where the Welsh catch is highly prized. Covering commercial sea catching, recreational sea angling, aquaculture and inland fisheries, it was developed in partnership with stakeholders including environmental organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund Cymru.
