Enugu State government has promised to minimize the rate of unemployment in youths as the local authorities have started youth fish farming programme, which could reduce unemployment by about 50 percent before the end of December 2009, through its current investment in fish farming.
The government informed that fish farm estimated to be worth over N15million. Matthias Anike the chairman of the council told that the administration decided to embark on fish farming to create employment for the youths and generate revenue for the council. He further informed that the ponds presently had over one hundred thousand fishes, and that the council had entered into partnership with Unipaco farms which will serve as advisers through the head of agricultural department to ensure smooth running
Anike also disclosed that 35 hectares of land within the local government that would likewise be used for the cultivation of cassava and maize and that arrangements had been concluded for the establishment of processing machines for the processing and packaging of the products within the local government.
It is also said that the council was investing about 50 percent of its’ yearly budget into opening of rural roads across all communities in the council to enhance the activities of the rural farmers who can now engage the services of tractors and other farm inputs to promote agriculture in the area. Anike urged the youths to take more advantage of the programme provided by the council and avail the opportunity.
