A report by Danish TV station TC2 exposing systematic drug trafficking through Danish ports has come as a surprise to the Danish Fishermen’s PO.
The report outlined that a number of the Dutch trawlers landing regularly in Hanstholm and Thyborøn have been intercepting packages of narcotics dropped overboard from large merchant vessels passing offshore, and landing the illicit substances at the same time as their fish.
DFPO chairman Svend-Erik Andersen said that the revelation has come as a shock.
‘It’s shocking and surprising that this kind of thing should occur in the Danish ports. We strongly distance ourselves from this, and I urge the authorities to quickly and efficiently put an end to smuggling and to restore security at ports,’ he said, comenting that DFPO expects that in the wake of these revelations the authorities will increase their presence at Danish ports.
‘I hope the authorities take this matter extremely seriously, and I hope that we will see more police in the ports and an strengthening of the customs authorities, so that this smuggling will be ended. It is completely unacceptable, and at DFPO we are happy to support the authorities in their work in every way we can,’ Svend-Erik Andersen said.
