According to a press brief of HB Grandi Lundey NS has set out for a capelin search cruise being carried out in co-operation with the Marine Research Institute. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, explained that Lundey will start deep east of Iceland and is expected to spend several days searching for capelin. He added that this project is an important one keeping in mind the surging demand of pelagic in the market.
Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson also informed that the company expect to fish its research quota over the next week in co-operation with the Marine Research Institute and other vessel operators although the company is hoping that the vessel will be fishing as usual by the end of the week with a TAC for the season. Fisheries Minister Steingrímur J Sigfússon has authorised a 15,000 tonne research quota for the duration of the search that is allocated on a proportional basis to vessels and which is used partly at the discretion of the Marine Research Institute.
It is said that at the start of the year Lundey and Faxi RE both took part in capelin research. It is also told that both these vessels are well equipped with high-tech communications equipment that allows the Marine Research Institute to monitor the vessels’ fish finding equipment remotely in real time.
