As per the account of the Coast Guard the 77-foot Capt. John & Son deep-sea fishing vessel based in Plymouth was safely evacuated around 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday 16 July after its engine room filled with smoke. The Coast Guard also told that the vessel was six miles off of Gurnet Light and there were 36 passengers on board.
In a statement the Coat Guard said that the vessel issue alert on time and five Coast Guard boats responded to the scene as well several Good Samaritan vessels. All the passengers of the vessel were safely transferred onto the company’s sister ship, Tails of the Sea, a whale watching boat, which continued on its excursion, informed the Coats Guard. According to them there were no injuries and the vessel was towed back to Plymouth for investigation.
Many passengers were on the board to watch whale and some of them for fishing. Then suddenly one passenger noticed smoke coming out of engine room and alert the captain. Petty Officer Lauren Jorgensen, a Coast Guard spokeswoman, said that the smoke was caused by an oil leak in the engine room, but the crew was able to contain it before it burst into flames.
