Congressman Don Young, Gabrielle LeDoux (R-Kodiak), and Democrats Diane Benson, Ethan Berkowitz, and Jake Metcalfe have agreed to take part in the well known fisheries debate, which is limited to fisheries and the seafood industry. The topic of the debate is “that’s the catch”.
The fisheries debate has become a norm since 1990 which inaugurates the annual ComFish Alaska trade show. The show attracted nearly 100 percent participation by candidates for Alaska governor and US Senate and this year for the first time the US House candidates participate. It is said that the debate is telecast live to more than 330 communities across Alaska.
Deb King, director of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of ComFish, explained that the fishing industry is Alaska’s number one private employer and produces more than half of nation’s wild seafood. He states that this debate allows the candidates to share their knowledge and ideas about this industry.
Congressman Don Young, in email informed that the commercial fishing industry is backbone of Alaska’s economy and it is the lifeblood of many of the communities, and an important part of Alaska’s future. According to Gabrielle LeDoux the fishing industry is one of the top money makers for Alaska and ComFish debate provides a unique opportunity to tell Alaskans the value of fishing industry.
Jake Metcalfe of Juneau said that the commercial fishing is more than just a job for many Alaskans, it’s a defining lifestyle. Ethan Berkowitz said that it is important to keep Alaska’s coastal communities strong and make sure the fisheries are sustainable.
