Sudden death of millions of farmed fish in China has posed great threat to the seafood industry of the country. Chinese authorities are investigating the causes behind such deaths in Fujian, the country’s largest carp producing province. According to a local government spokesman the dead fish were discovered in the Minjiang River flowing through the townships of Shuikou and Huangtian in Gutian.
He informed that till date fish from more than 9,000 cages have been founded dead. The losses affect more than 700 families who run fish farms in the two townships. He also told that there will be a direct loss of CNY 100 million (€11 million/$15.7 million). Gutian County produces more than 125 metric tons a day, according to AsiaNews.it. More than 1,000 people blocked the main road in Gutian county to protest the authorities’ indifference to the deaths after authorities reportedly said that there was “nothing abnormal” going on.
There were protest regarding the sudden deaths of farmed in the province and clashes broke out when police intervened to break the protests. The residents said that the water is black and there is an oily substance on the surface. The government spokesperson said that very soon an investigation report will be out.
