ollowing the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the Danish Pelagic Producers Organisation (DPPO) North Sea herring fishery at the beginning of the month, the DPPO has now received MSC certification for its North East Atlantic mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring fisheries. The assessment followed the new MSC Fishery Assessment Methodology (FAM)and took a total of eight and a half months, making it the fastest MSC-assessment to date.
The certification means that DPPO will be able to offer 24,024 MT of certified mackerel and 32,301 MT of certified herring for the growing European market for MSC certified fish.
Christian Olesen, Director of the DPPO said: “We are happy that we have now concluded the process with certifying our three main fisheries. Having broken records adds of course to our satisfaction. This proves to us that the administration of fisheries in Denmark is on a high level of transparency and reliability.”
MSC Northern Europe Manager, Camiel Derichs, added: “The Danish Pelagic Producers Organisation (DPPO) has demonstrated their exceptional management and sustainability credentials with this certification. Not only has the Atlanto Scandian herring fishery obtained certification without conditions [3], they also obtained certification for both mackerel and herring faster than any other fishery before in the initial assessment. I congratulate DPPO on this achievement and wish their members success in the marketplace.”
