Food and environment minister Eva Kjer Hansen has today informed the Danish prime minister that she is resigning from her post.
She has said that she has enjoyed every single day of her work as minister for food, agriculture and environmental affairs, a brief that includes fisheries, but will not stand in the way of Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s second administration, commenting that Denmark needs a government built on unity.
The pressure on her escalated earlier this week as the conservative party announced its loss of confidence in her as minister in the wake of the controversial agriculture bill that was passed on Thursday and the Social Democrats also demanded that she go.
Initially backed by prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Eva Kjer Hansen cancelled a scheduled trip to Saudi Arabia and stepped down today, leaving the Danish government in an increasingly precarious position.
