All the crews of the pelagic vessels wait for the present round of stormy weather passes over so they can get back to sea. Lundey NS is in Fuglafjördur with 400 tonnes in her tanks. Faxi RE is in Klaksvík with 100 tonnes, alongside Ingunn AK, which has yet to start fishing. Lundey’s chief mate and relief skipper Stefán Geir Jónsson informed that the weather started to worsen on Wednesday night and the outlook isn’t good for the next few days.
There is no doubt that cold damn weather in Iceland is dampening the spirit of fishing. According to Jonsson they were in the so-called ‘grey area’ between the Faroese and Scottish territorial waters. He explained this place is hard to work, with strong currents and difficult seas. He further said that their fish was taken in two 19 to 20 hour tows over two days. He added that seven or eight other Icelandic vessels were on the same fishing grounds, along with Faroese and Russian vessels.
Stefán Geir Jónsson also expressed that the fishing was slow and the blue whiting are small due to bad weather. But thing was not the same last week as the fishing was good, but then it fell away.
