Burdekin residents and visitors are getting lesson on fishing rules and regulations from the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol. The reminder comes after QBFP officers seized a catch of 126 whiting after pulling over a vehicle towing a caravan on the Bruce Highway south of Home Hill this week.
Acting District Officer Karl Roebuck said that as there were two occupants in the vehicle, it means the amount of whiting they were carrying was 66 fish over the bag limit. As per rules the bag limit for sand/summer whiting, gold-lined whiting and Northern whiting is 30 per person. Violating the rules result in maximum penalty for bag limit infringements is $100,000, informs Roebuck.
According to QBFP officers they have located numbers of whiting above the legal bag limits in caravans and mobile homes in the Burdekin. Roebuck explained that fishing rules and regulations are enforced to make sure that they preserve species and fishing continues to be a popular past time for generations to come.
