Alber Seafood Co. manager Wayne Gazin pointed out that guys are still getting a few crab as the season is declared bust. The local harvest hasn’t been enough to prevent the processing company from having to ship additional crab in from Oregon and Washington. He added that they have stopped buying crab today and won’t start again until Friday so that their crew can spend the day with their families.
Crescent City Harbor CEO Richard Young said Tuesday he isn’t impressed with the crab season so far. He told that this season has been pretty poor which means an economic hit for a port that is already struggling. Humboldt State Economist Steve Hacket opined that Northern California ports are heavily dependent on the Dungeness crab harvest. He also said that it is difficult to support harbour facilities without having enough commercial fishing revenue.
Although the authority predicted that the crab season is a total bust but the fishermen are still having crabs. It is told that the scarcity of crabs does have one positive impact for the fishermen that the price per pound is rising.
