Noted biologist and environmental engineer Alfred Schumm has been appointed to a 2 year term on ISSF’s Board of Directors. From 2003 Schumm was working as Director of WWF Germany’s Marine Program focused on the North East Atlantic (incl. Wadden Sea and Baltic Sea), West and East Africa and Coral Triangle. In 2009 he became Acting Director of WWF’s global Smart Fishing Network Initiative (SFNI).
ISSF President Susan Jackson informed that with the growth of the Foundation the expansion of the Board of Directors become necessary which include the perspective of another well-respected fisheries specialist is important to our initiative and its future successes. The ISSF Board of Directors sets policy for the Foundation and is comprised of a mix of scientific, conservation, fisheries and industry experts.
Commenting on his appointment Schumm said he wa excited to be apart of it. He also said that the sustainability of tuna fisheries must be a top priority in marine management and ISSF’s intent to get at the root cause of unsustainable practices, addressing and correcting less than fully functioning RFMOs, is the key to a progressive turn around.
