The weather is perfect for cod fishing but a recent ban on it hold the fishermen to go on seas for cod fishing. In early January MP Michael Foster negotiated an increase in the catch limit of cod for local fishermen. The government agreed to raise the quota for small boats but it also said that once the quota was exhausted the fishing would have to stop.
The fishermen asked to increase the limit that should last through March or April as there is usually poor weather at this time. Since the weather was good but the quota was already reached and the Minister placed a ban on further cod catches. Russell Drew, from Market Fisheries, at Rye, said the decision is really frustrating as it is a very good season for cod and there lots of them.
According to Foster some stern measures should be taken to ease the plight of local fishermen. He asked the Fisheries Minister Jonathan Shaw for some financial support would for the fishermen to pay their mortgages until the sole came on in April. Fishermen are now decided to file a legal challenge to get quotas increased for smaller boats.
