According to the information Jow Borg has arrived in the Canary Islands for a two day visit. It is said that among other issues CFP reform and local affairs on agenda. It is informed that Borg’s first port of call will be Tenerife, where he will meet the Fishermen’s Association of El Pris, Tacoronte, and discuss the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy and the outermost regions.
It is informed that Borg will be accompanied by Ms Pilar Merino, Regional Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Canary Islands Government. The Commissioner will also schedule to meet Paulino Rivero, President of the Canary Islands Government, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On Friday morning Commissioner Borg will be in Arrecife, capital of the island of Lanzarote, at the Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute, where he will also be joined by Rivero and Juan Carlos Martín Fragueiro, Spanish Secretary-General for the Sea, at a conference to discuss the Green Paper on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
According to the information Borg will address a range of issues relating to the Green Paper, which the Commission published earlier this year to launch the reform debate. After this, the Commissioner will take part in a round table discussion on the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the Canary Islands, together with representatives from the sector itself, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Maritime Affairs.
