Uganda is developing cage farming with all efforts in Bunyaruguru County. Cage fish farming is a process whereby a cage is placed in a lake or a pond and the young fish kept there to grow and feed. The Member of Parliament representing the area, Gaude Tindamanyire told that over 30 crater lakes in the area have not been fully utilized for a long time.
According to Tindamanyire he was recently leading a team from USAID’s Fisheries Investment for Sustainable Harvest (F.I.S.H) on a fact finding mission to assess the viability of the project. He also said that the project will increase fish production and provide employment to the locals.
Karen L.Veverica, the F.I.S.H project chief of party, pointed out that instead of using land that is becoming scarce, lakes can be used to increase fish production. Veverica added that USAID would assist the locals with technical and material support to set up a demonstration farm at Lake Mugogo in Ryeru sub-county. He informed that several resource use committees would be set up at village level to control the use of the lakes.
