Fisheries Innovation Scotland has announced that applications are open for the next International Study Bursary 2018.
The bursary is for young people in the fishing industry to travel to another country to take up placements, working alongside those working in or with commercial fishing, including processing, supply chain, NGO, academia or other sectors.
Individuals must have identified an international study or networking opportunity that could further their development or career. There is no set budget for the bursary as this varies depending on location and travel costs. It is likely that applicants will come from the ‘younger’ sector of the industry, but it is very much about development of the individual. John Goodlad, Chair of Fisheries Innovation Scotland, is delighted with how previous bursary award winners used their time and gained valuable experience.
‘Fishing is changing so it is essential that we encourage, able, skilled and enthusiastic young people to take the Scottish Fishing Industry forward. Career development is crucial in this respect, and we know as an industry that we can learn from other nations. The opportunity to study how fisheries are managed and organised in other parts of the world will help the next generation develop their careers and benefit the wider fishing industry in Scotland,’ he said.
‘Fisheries Innovation Scotland has funded previous bursaries, Michael Forbes and Simon Harvey visited British Columbia and Hannah Fennel spent time in Denmark, where they all worked alongside fishermen and others in the industry. Their presentations at the Scottish Fishing Conference left no one in any doubt that these awards have made a real difference to them, and ultimately to the industry, so we are therefore delighted to announce the next International Study Bursary.’
FIS is now accepting applications for the 2018 International Study Bursary (closing date, 31st October 2018).
