It was the arrival of a Warner Brothers film crew to shoot scenes for Dunkirk on the IJsselmeer that prompted Urk company SeaVSat to take a closer look at its 3G/4G communications capabilities.
The Urk-based company is a major provider of satellite communications, providing a host of services all over the world ranging from satellite TV access to voice-over-IP and crew communications packages – and not only to the maritime sector.
‘Our core products are satellite TV and internet provision to the marine sector,’ managing director Sjoerd de Boer explained.
‘But we are always working to provide the services our clients ask for.’
The 3G/4G capability had been used as a back-up for coasters, as satellite systems can suffer from interference from harbour infrastructure when in port, but the film crews wanted something compact. Now SeaVSat has two pilot projects underway to develop this much more affordable option that is more suitable for smaller vessels.
The aim is to stretch the range so that 140 miles can be achieved, which Henri de Boer of SeaVSat is all about finding the right antenna.
‘And if the right technology isn’t there, we’ll make it happen,’ he said, commenting that SeaVSat expects this to become a commercially available product this year
