According to local news agency Brunei is ready to welcome a new multi-million-dollar Eco Aquaculture Park in Tutong District, which is billed to generate income of $42 million or more annually on a sustainable basis, is set to play a significant role in developing the nation’s fish industry. It is said that the park will be located at Sungai Paku of Mukim Telisai, the Eco Aquaculture Park is scheduled to be completed by October 2010 and is one of the projects under the National Development plan 2007-2012.
It is informed that the environment-friendly development concept has taken into consideration the natural features and principles of environmental sustainability in the design and operation of the site. The initiative, which is carried out by the Fisheries Department under Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, will focus on the culture of high value fishes using the latest technology such as the Ecological Recirculating Aquaculture System (ERAS), which is the first of its kind to be used for a large-scale fish culture project in Brunei Darussalam.
Haji Sabri bin Haji Mohd Taha, Senior Fisheries Officer, in a presentation at the groundbreaking ceremony of the project, told that with the recirculating aquaculture system, water used will be recycled to help guarantee the production of high quality fishes. He also said that disease in fishes is one of the biggest challenges for the fish industry, especially in aquaculture and the Ecological Recirculating Aquaculture System can help prevent the threat of diseases that might infect the fishes.
