Belgian-flagged beamer Sylvia Mary Z-525 was lost earlier today south of Porthgwarra. A distress call was responded to by the Sennen Cove lifeboat and a Coastguard helicopter was also deployed to the location.
RNLI lifeboat City of London III was at the location within twenty minutes of launching and the beamer’s crew were advised to board a liferaft, as their vessel was clearly sinking. The RNLI lifeboat was unable to make a close approach as the 24-metre Sylvia Mary’s derricks were still lowered.
The four crew were recovered from the liferaft and were taken to Newlyn to be cared for by the Coastguard and the Mission.
According to Dutch media, Sylvia Mary’s crew are all from Urk. Two other Belgian-flagged beamers, Albert Bos Z-41 and Grietje Z-187 were also at the scene.
