First spadeful of earth for new Fjarðanet net loft

An important event in Fjarðanet’s history took place this week as the first spadeful of earth was taken for the company’s new net loft in the east coast fishing port of Neskaupstaður. Managing director Jón Einar Marteinnsson and Steindór Björnsson and Jón Bjarnason, former net loft foremen at Fjarðanet and Netagerð Friðriks Vilhjálmssonar, took the symbolic first spadefuls. Both of them have decades of experience with these companies, although Jón Bjarnason retired some years ago.

New market is latest phase in development of Lerwick’s fishing industry hub

Construction work on Lerwick Harbour’s replacement whitefish market is scheduled to begin this month in a project that will more than double capacity for landings at the UK´s second largest fishing port. Following competitive tendering, Tulloch Developments Ltd A532;has been appointed main contractor by Lerwick Port Authority, with completion set for early 2020.

Room for quota system to be improved, says Fiskebåt

According to Johnny Berfjord of Norwegian vessel owners’ federation Fiskebåt, there is potential to make the Norwegian quota system both simpler and easier to work with. His comments have been made on the association’s website just as the Norwegian authorities are working on a Parliamentary report on the quota system. Johnny Berfjord commented that there is a need to ensure calm and stability around the structure of the fishing fleet.
