Global fish production set to grow further

The 2018 FAO State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) report predicts that global fisheries production is set to pass 200 million tonnes by 2030. The current figure is 171 million tonnes, with capture fisheries at a steady level and the expected growth is in aquaculture. The overall first-sale value of all fisheries and aquaculture production in 2016 is put at $362 billion.

Industry, NGOs and UN want socially, environmentally and commercially sustainable fisheries

Participants in a side event on social issues held during the current 33rd session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) session have made clear that despite the progress in health and safety operations, insufficient attention has been given by governments to the implementation of essential principles of international law for the protection of fishing people, making fishing remain a hazardous activity.
