Atlantic Fisheries Fund support to rebuild burned out seafood factory

The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick announced a repayable contribution of just over $1 million for Miscou Fish Products Inc. and the Canadian Crab Packers Associates Limited for new equipment and technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their processing operations. The contribution derives from the $400 million Atlantic Fisheries Fund (AFF), focused on growing opportunities and increasing market value for sustainably sourced, high-quality fish and seafood products from Atlantic Canada.

Wearing a lifejacket could save your life, Casualty Review Panel says

Thirteen people who drowned in 2017 might be alive today had they been wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, according to the findings of this year’s Casualty Review Panel. The panel, which includes the SFF’s Derek Cardno, meets annually to discuss the previous year’s appropriate maritime fatalities and whether those who died might have survived had they been wearing a lifejacket.

Good fishing all summer

HB Grandi’s freezer trawler Höfrungur III is now back fishing off the Westfords after breaking its trip for a half-landing in Reykjavík at the beginning of the week. According to skipper Haraldur Árnason, there has been good fishing all summer, although each trip is managed on the basis of which species are most economic to catch.
