‘The Icelandic vessels are now fishing alongside Norwegian and Faroese vessels around 410 nautical miles from Vopnafjördur and this is too distant for fishing to be feasible,’ said Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson.
As has already been reported, Ingunn AK is now about to land the last 400 tonnes of the Atlanto-Scandian herring season in Vopnafjördur and this brings the company’s fleet’s landings up to around 40,000 tonnes of herring since the season began in May. In addition, they have also landed 18,500 tonnes of mackerel and 500 tonnes of blue whiting over the same period. This brings the three vessels’ total catch up to 59,000 tonnes in only four months. But fishing has been excellent with the Atlanto-Scandian herring closer to home that in past years.
According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, Ingunn is expected to sail for a research cruise to examine mackerel distribution once the catch has been discharged, in co-operation with the Marine Research Institute and the Ministry of Fisheries. Faxi RE is docked in Akranes for minor routine maintenance and Lundey NS is steaming from Vopnafjördur to Reykjavík, where its winch drums are due to be renewed.
