Hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae magellanicus) of this fishery which has entered full assessment for MSC status, says the certification body, Ogranización Internacional Agropecuaria (OIA). At first OIA wants to have free dialogue with al organizations or individuals with a direct interest in the fishery. The certification body invited comments or information to the assessment process which should be relevant to the status of the stock, ecosystem interactions or fishery management practices.
The location of this fishery is Argentina Sea and surrounding waters, extending from Tierra del Fuego, Isla de los Estados, Burdwood Bank and the Malvinas Island; including the Common Fishing Zone between Argentina and Uruguay, delimited in Rio de la Plata and Marmitime Front (FAO statistical area 41).
The fishing method use in this fishery is industrial bottom trawl net and Industrial semi-pelagic trawl net. And the management is well look after by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and Fisheries dependencies (Sub-secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture), and the Federal Fisheries Council (CFP). The main market is not Argentina but most of Hoki are exported. A few supermarkets offer a sub-product called kanikama in the local market. Some fishing vessels produce surimi on board which is mostly sold in Japan; although a local sirimi processing plant in Puerto Deseado produces crab imitation.
The timeline for this assessment is near about 12 months and is scheduled for completion around 30th December 2010.
