In June, the M/V Jupiter FD42 got a new 2048 metre trawl intended for pair trawling in the surface for Mackerel. Already after the first tow, Cpt. Emil Petersen realized that this trawl was extremely light to tow compared to other trawls of the same size and, at the same time had a very large opening. The crew on the “Jupiter” also soon discovered that the catches of mackerel were quite high compared to the towing time.
The trawl has its similarities to the huge 2688 metre trawl that was used by many ships during the summer of 2010. The length of the head line and the footrope is the same, and the upper and lower wings are also identical.
Both captains have been out with the trawl with great results, and the crew is also positive when it comes to the handling on deck.
Now, by mid september, when the mackerel quota in Faroese waters is almost finished we heard from “Jupiter” that they had a tow lasting 2 hours. They caught 1000 tonnes!
“This is the best pair trawl I’ve ever fished with! I also find it very interesting that the trawl is so light to tow. I’m sure we won’t have any problem using it on our own using trawl doors!”
