According to local news agency Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) is said to provide a one-day fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course in Seward from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on April 7, at the Alaska Vocational Technical Center’s (AVTEC) radar room. It is told that the course is available free to licensed commercial fishermen, thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the USCG.
AMSEA informed that the fee for this course is $175 for others but for fishermen it is free of cost. It also said that the safety course is US Coast Guard approved and meets the training requirements for commercial fishing vessels. However, the course is open to all mariners, regardless of their fishing status.
It is explained that during the course U.S. Coast Guard-approved, Marine Survival Equipment, Procedures and Onboard Drills training, participants will practice with the type of emergency equipment that should be onboard any commercial fishing or other sizeable vessel — personal floatation devices, life rafts, immersion suits, EPIRBs, fire extinguishers. This will definitely teach and practice the emergency procedures such as man overboard, abandon ship, fire fighting and flooding control issues.
