According to the press information the new fishmeal factory at Vopnafjördur is making steady but good progress, says factory manager Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson. He informed that the construction is on schedule and this week they expect to finish concreting the floor of the new meal store that is being built on the site of the company’s old fishmeal store. He also said that the factory building has now been weatherproofed and practically all of the equipment has been placed.
Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson told that there are still a few pumps that need to be fitted. The electrical systems are being installed at the moment and this is going ahead at full speed after the electricians had found it difficult to work while the factory equipment was being put in place. It is said that in total 40 persons including the fishmeal plant staff have been working on the construction at Vopnafjördur.
It is said that both the new factory and the new meal store, work has also included maintenance on the old fishmeal plant building. As per the schedule, it should be possible to start up the new fishmeal factory at the end of January, but Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said that it remains to be seen what raw material will be available then. He said that January has normally been a quiet month for them. Sometimes we have seen some herring at that time of year, as the capelin fishing doesn’t tend to get underway until they are into February.
