50 tonnes of farmed cod are due to be slaughtered at HB Grandi’s farm in Berufjördur. This is scheduled to start after Christmas and will continue into the New Year. The cod will be processed at the company’s factory in Akranes and sold as fresh portions and fillets to overseas markets.
Kristján Ingimarsson, in charge of HB Grandi’s aquaculture in Djúpivogur, says that the slaughter is expected to take place on the Sunday 28th and Monday 29th of December, with the fish available for processing at Akranes on the Monday and Tuesday. The process will then restart in the New Year.
‘This is 2005 cod that came to us originally from IceCod at Stadur in Grindavík in 2006 as 100 gramme fingerlings that were put into sea cages. The fish are an average weight of 2.30kg,’ Kristján Ingimarsson says, commenting that the fish have grown well this year. HB Grandi now has two generations of cod being raised in its cages at Berufjördur.
