HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Venus is on its way to Vopnafjörður with 1200 tonnes of herring on board. This catch, which is the first to be landed at Vopnafjörður following the seamen’s strike, was taken in five hauls west of Faxaflói Bay.
‘There’s more to be seen now than there was before the strike. We found some decent marks of herring with good results when we were able to hit them right,’ said Venus’s skipper Róbert Axelsson. He and his crew were the first ones back to sea when the strike ended, along with pelagic vessels Bjarni Ólafsson and Jóna Eðvalds.
He said that the weather during the trip was not the most comfortable, but didn’t seem to affect the fishing.
‘We started further north close to the Kolluáll Gully and then moved south. We took the last tow in the Faxi Deeps, which is north-west of the Mountains. This is good herring with an average weight of 340 grammes. There was only one haul when we had smaller herring and that wasn’t a big one,’ Róbert Axelsson said as Venus was steaming through fine weather south of the Mýrdalur glacier.
