HB Grandi’s Venus docked at Vopnafjördur last night with 2300 tonnes of capelin on board. The fish were caught in Breidafjördur on Sunday and Tuesday, the only days when the weather was kind enough to allow the fleet to shoot its gear
According to skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson, a western migration of capelin at the weekend was what saved the season for them.
‘It’s difficult to estimate amounts on the fishing grounds because of the conditions. But this was often very good capelin with well matured roes and with a noticeably high proportion of female fish in what we were able to catch from the western migration, compared to what we had been catching the previous week,’ he said, commenting that for Venus, the season is now over.
Víkingur is now fishing in Breidafjördur and will take the remainder of HB Grandi’s capelin quotas.
Gudlaugur Jónsson said that he expects Venus’s catch to have been discharged by tomorrow afternoon and what comes next is as yet uncertain. Either the crew get an early Easter break, or else they will be fishing blue whiting after Easter.
