New England Coast Guard stations at Chatham and Gloucester both received calls for assistance yesterday as two fishing vessels were taking on water in separate incidents yesterday.
A rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Chatham was launched and arrived at the position of fishing vessel Silver Fox seven miles south-east of Monomoy Island with a pair of P-6 dewatering pumps. The boat was taking on water through its shaft seal and with the pumps coping with the ingress of water, Silver Fox was escorted to safety at Hyannis Harbor.
The same day, Christina Eleni contacted Coast Guard Station Gloucester, reporting the boat was taking on water near Gloucester Harbor.
The Coast Guard lifeboat crew passed Christina Eleni’s crew two pumps to control the flow of water and and towed the fishing boat to the Gloucester state fish pier where the pumps were still needed to keep Christina Eleni from sinking.
The owner is expected to make plans to hoist the boat from the water and carry out repairs.
‘The two emergencies were similar and both had equally positive outcomes,’ said Lt. Samantha Leon, command duty officer at the First District Command Center. ‘The boat crews got on scene early, passed working pumps quickly, and monitored closely to ensure each fishing boat got back to port safely.’
